Show Less. Sell More.
How unfinished ideas lead to stronger brand identities
There’s a certain power in a sketch. It's alive and full of possibility. Most importantly, a rough drawing invites clients into the design process instead of presenting them with something that looks set in stone. Paul Arden, famed art director and author, famously said, “Rough layouts sell the idea better than polished ones.” Although he was talking about advertising, the lesson equally applies to lettering. A prematurely refined piece can feel final, while a loose sketch leaves room for conversation and collaboration.
Wisdom from Arden’s, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be
I learned that lesson the hard way during my first internship. I had carefully developed a concept in Illustrator and presented it to my boss. He loved it…then told me to quickly trace the printout in pencil before showing the client. I was confused at the time, but the message stuck with me: keep the dialogue open long enough to let the idea grow.
Every strong hand-lettered logo and brand identity begins with a rough idea
In our upcoming Lettering for Logos & Branding workshop, we’ll explore how to move from loose sketches to refined wordmarks without losing that initial spark. The class is open to all skill levels and includes a detailed PDF guidebook. No sweat if you can’t make the live online session on March 21, 2026; register now and you’ll get access to the full recording.
Happy sketching,
